Nature Reserve The Aulanko Nature Reserve, established in 1930 and extending over an area of 152.5 hectares, is controlled by the National Board of Forestry. In the course of time, the area has developed into an icon for forested countryside in Finland. The lush environs and well-known sights of Aulanko yearly attract over a million visitors. The region of Aulanko is one of our most precious and best-known national landscapes and has been appointed a nationally valuable scenic sight. The expanse of the nature reserve is overlooked by Aulanko Hill, which rises from the shore of Lake Aulangonjärvi 70 metres above the surface of the lake.

Fascinating Nature of Aulanko Within the Park Forest you will find a number of curiosities such as groves of curly birch and stands of foreign tree species. You can also see tree species with shapes differing from normal, such as weeping spruce and globe dwarf spruce. The varied stock of birds includes treecreeper, lesser spotted woodpecker, nutcracker, tawny owl, goldcrest and several kinds of titmice.

The First National Urban Park in Finland The splendid park landscape of Hämeenlinna on the shores of glittering Lake Vanajavesi was awarded an outstanding acknowledgement in January, 2001, when the nationally valuable landscape unity of Vanajavesi Valley was integrated as Finland"™s first and the world"™s second national urban park. The land area of the park, extending from the town centre over the castle to Aulanko, is 738 hectares.
